My name is Helen and I'm a Bloater - MUMenTUM

In under two weeks time I'm going to be attending a book launch  and a week after that I'm going to Ladies Day at Royal Ascot. I have a dress to wear (shhh it's the same dress for both occasions!) and I feel ok in it but I know I will hate any photos of myself in it because I look and feel such a blob. I know there's not much I can do about the way I look in less than 2 weeks but I'm determined to make myself feel a bit better and at least get rid of some of the bloatiness. I know what I should be doing, I've known it for the past six months, and yet here I am still overweight and bloaty.

Cooking With Your Toddler.....Crispy Chocolate Chip Flapjacks

When I first started this blog I posted a 'Cooking With Your Toddler' recipe each week but when Jack started pre-school it ceased, I just never seemed to find the time (or often the inclination) to fit it in. On Friday morning we found a bit of spare time and squeezed in spot of Flapjack making. They are not traditional Flapjacks as I didn't have enough of the right sugar and I thought I would try and add a little extra 'crunch' to them by throwing in a few Cheerios (Jack loves Cheerios) and some chocolate chips.

They went down extremely well with the rest of the family......and their friends, so much so that when I reached into the tin just now to have one with my coffee they were all gone. I suppose that's a good thing though.....a moment on the lips blah blah.......

Crispy Chocolate Chip Flapjacks

175g  Butter
100g  Dark Muscovado Sugar
75g Golden Caster Sugar
4tbsp Golden Syrup
350g Whole Jumbo porridge oats
50g Cheerios
50g Chocolate chips

  • Preheat the oven to 180 degrees C / 350 degrees F.
  • In a large saucepan melt the butter, sugars and golden syrup over a low heat, until the sugar has dissolved.
  • Remove from heat and stir in the porridge oats, cheerios and chocolate chips - we poured this mix into the dry ingredients as I didn't use a large enough saucepan, either way make sure you mix thoroughly until all the oats are covered.
  • Tip the mixture into a tin approx 11" x  7" and press into the corners and flatten down with the back of a spoon.
  • Bake for 20 minutes.
  • Allow to cool slightly and cut into bars/squares and then leave in the tin to cool completely before taking them out.

You may wonder why Jack is wearing a construction hat? I asked him to go and get his cooking hat from upstairs, he got most of the instruction right, just the wrong hat! He then decided that the hi-viz vest was an apron and who am I to argue with a 2 year old.......

The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea...

What is it with 8 year olds.......well 8 year old girls, and more importantly My 8 year old daughter!

This morning I was getting Jack dressed and I asked her if she'd brushed her teeth, "oh no, I forgot". Better that I ask her now than just as we are getting into the car (as happened yesterday with both her & her brother thinking they had got away with it). She then started talking at high speed (as she often does when she's excited about something that she's done) about Just Dance on the Wii and by the look of her I thought she'd been huffing & a puffing throwing some shapes this morning - and she knows the rules, no Wii or DS before school !

Flashback Friday

This week's  Flashback Friday was taken in the Summer of 2003. I had taken Sam and Hanna for a day out to a Steam Railway and we would be riding on Thomas.  Sam was then 3 months short of his 3rd birthday and Hanna was 11 months old.  We were somewhere in Derbyshire and it was a very hot day. We took a picnic and boarded Thomas for a short journey to a stop where they had a picnic area, a few shops and some kids rides. My two were very well behaved if I remember rightly and it was a very enjoyable day out, I just wish days out could be the same now, without arguing, bickering or moaning!

I'm Invited........

I knew it was on it's way as I had seen Tweets about it but when I opened the door to the Postie this morning I still said to myself 'ooh I wonder what this could be'. I then got a little bit excited when I realised what it was before I could finish opening it............

The Gallery - Mustachioed

The theme for  The Gallery this week is an easy one and I knew which photo I would use as soon as I saw the prompt.

what? I hear you ask? Mustachioed? Yes you know Moustache, Mustache, Tache, Soup Strainer, Cookie Duster.....

In Tara's words she is after :
Photos of moustaches. Real ones, fake ones, ones on your kids, your cats, your grandma. Have a giggle dressing your top lip up and the one Laura likes the most wins the camera. Simples.

WorldFoods Fusion of Flavours

I don't know about you, but I love spicy foods - Indian, Chinese, Thai....I would be willing to try anything, as long as it's got a bit of a kick to it. I'm hooked on chillies, I eat them on salads, jacket potatoes and in toasties.....and when I was in Majorca recently I even had one with fresh Mango in a cocktail.

I recently came across the Facebook page for WorldFoods Fusion of Flavours and thought how delicious there sauces looked and when I saw that they were giving away a hamper packed full of their goodies along with a chance of joining their team I had to enter. The lovely people at WorldFoods then contacted me to ask if I would kindly share the news of the competition with my blog readers. If you want the chance to win this fabulous hamper and be part of the WorldFoods team then all you need to do is pop over to their Facebook page, Like it and then let them know why you should have a piece of the action.

The Importance of Wearing a Bike Helmet......and a Competition

Recently a good friend of mine suffered a terrible accident whilst out riding her Mountain bike with another friend and their 3 children (11,11 and 8yrs). They were just returning to the Car Park after enjoying a leisurely ride across Cannock Chase when Helen hit a dip in the ground (only established afterwards when her husband and daughter returned to the scene) and was thrown from her bike, where she lay unconscious for almost 5 minutes. Her eleven year old daughter seeing it all happen, Helen's bike going one way and her the other, chest slamming on the ground and her body flipping over, rushed over to her and thought she was dead, until the Paramedics arrived a short time later.

COMPETITION TIME - Win a box of Toys & Goodies

I did promise that when my blog reached 100 followers I would have a competition. The past couple of days I have been side-tracked slightly by the amazing news that we have been invited by Toys R Us onto their fabulous team of Toyologists. In the meantime my Blog has now reached 104 followers so I thought I had better do something about the Competition.

The lovely people at Munchkins and Poppets have sent me an amazing box of goodies to give away to one of you lovely followers. (Well actually Munchkins and Poppets is me but I thought it sounded better than "I had a root through some of my excess stock and this is what I came up with!")

Emotional rollercoaster of a ride

The last few days have been a bit of an emotional rollercoaster. It started last wednesday when Toys R Us announced the shortlist for their 2011 Toyologists. I had heard via Twitter that The Boy And Me had been shortlisted so I thought I would pop over to the Toys R Us Facebook page and see if I recognised any of the other names on the list.......I was gobsmacked to say the least when I spotted my own name on there. I have only been blogging since the end of January and despite being ranked at position 267 (whatever that means?!) in the Tots 100 I still found it hard to believe that Toys R Us actually liked my review enough to put me on the shortlist. I felt very proud and honoured and I let myself get a little bit too excited if I'm honest, and started to imagine all those lovely toys arriving at my door and thinking how my kids would love me so much more for it.....well for at least the next six months anyway.

I'm an Ologist of the best kind....

Hurraaaahhhh, as of 12.00 today I am an official Toys R Us Toyologist and I'm so excited.

Need help around the house anyone?

Whilst I was out driving today I was moving slowly in traffic and following a van.

On the rear of the van in large lettering it said

"Do you need help around the house?"

Flashback Friday - 2005

This week's  Flashback Friday was taken towards the end of 2005 out on a hen night and not a costume in sight, just pink scarves and Cowboy hats. There is a bit of a story about that night that will be remembered for evermore amongst my circle of friends and, they say, could only happen to me!

The Gallery - Chilled

I'm not great at joining in with The Gallery as I seem to miss the prompt, I saw it this week but I've still managed to be a late entry.

There are lots of great entries on the Linky this week, many featuring sleeping babies or children looking very chilled.  I came across these photos a while ago whilst looking for photos for Flashback Friday so when I saw the prompt for this week's Gallery I immediately knew which pictures I would use.

It's a Waiting Game

Yesterday I was thrilled and shocked to hear that I had made it onto the Toys R Us Toyologists shortlist. After hearing on Twitter that the wonderful The Boy and Me had made it onto the list I thought I would have a quick browse to see if I recognised any of the other names on the list of 25. I was gobsmacked when I saw my name 9th from the top and to be honest I still can't quite believe that out of the hundreds of reviews that Toys R Us received they picked mine.

My Fairy Godmother

How excited was I today when our Fairy Godmother delivered us a parcel.

I knew what it was before I opened it as I had seen it on a few blogs already, but I was still very excited and somehow managed to leave it for the kids to open. The lovely people at Fairy Non Bio contacted me to say that I had been chosen to receive a 'bespoke and exclusive' giftpack to celebrate Fairy Non Bio's partnership with Disney's Winnie The Pooh as well as the recently released movie. I was thrilled to be chosen and even more thrilled when it arrived.

Sam & Jack tore open the packaging, which took some time due to the amount of 'Fragile' tape and bubble wrap. Sam wondered what all the fuss was about, saying "but it's only a cupboard", but once it was opened up Jack took each item out, held it up and said "about this one cheese".... I have him well trained.

The toy chest is gorgeous in itself and of excellent quality, being Pin Furniture, but what makes it special are the Fairy Non Bio stickers but in particular this one :

How cool is that! Ok well this blog is not exactly called 'Jessie's Crazy Kitchen' but as it will now take pride of place in my (Jess, as I'm known) kitchen, I'm extremely happy with it.

Inside the chest there was some Fairy Non Bio Gel, Softener, a lovely fleece blanket, a Pooh teddy and 3 audio books - Winnie the Pooh and a day for Eeyore, The Original Story of Winnie the Pooh and Piglet's Big Movie. These are available with every purchase of Fairy Non Bio (gel, liquitabs, powder and softener) until the end of September. You just need to send off your till receipt and you will receive the audio book of your choice.

We haven't listened to them yet but will do soon, unless Jack gets hold of them and posts them in the Wii first!

I have been sent all these lovely goodies free of charge, however I wasn't asked to write a review or paid to do so, I just wanted to.

Girls Let Loose.......a taster

This morning I arrived back home around 1am from my girls long weekend away in Magalluf. Four nights away, equivalent to 1 night of sleep!

Probably due to the lack of sleep and healthy food, overindulgence of alcohol and sharing a room with someone with tonsillitis I am now full of cold, have a cough like a 40-a-day smoker and someone has stolen my voice.

Since I got home 8 year old Hanna has been throwing up on a regular basis and Jack has been his usual boisterous self. Thankfully they are both sleeping now. I promise I will post more about my weekend in the very near future, but for now here is a little taster .........

Flashback Friday - 2009

As I am currently on a girly break in Majorca I thought it would be quite apt to post a photo from my last girly weekend with this group of friends for this weeks Flashback Friday .

The photo was taken in September 2009 in Fuengirola with a group of old friends from the town where I grew up. I hadn't been on one of these foreign jolly's with them before for one reason or another but I have been on plenty of UK weekend breaks with them, the first in 1995 when it was just myself and Jo (Litte Mis-led ), we went camping in Monmouth with our Mountain Bikes and cycled for miles around Monmouth and Symonds Yat. Each year there were more friends than the previous, and less cycling, until one year we just managed to cycle the half mile or so to the nearest pub and stayed there for the rest of the day (and evening).

In more recent years the group has got larger and the destinations further afield, but what remains is that a great time is always guaranteed.

And just in case you don't recognise me, I'm Little Mis-hap !

Why don't you join Cafe Bebe & the rest of us reminiscing & having a laugh or cry over old snaps.

Ease The Guilt....

Today I'm off to Majorca for a few days.

I'm not taking the family though, I'm going on a girly weekend in Magaluf, God help me please! There's around 20 of us in total, friends from the town where I grew up.

My husband is taking a couple of days off work, I have school dinners booked for the older two and I have already made Jack's packed lunch for tomorrow. Dinner is in the slow cooker and the washing is up to date.

Last night my 10 year old gave me 1 Euro that he found in his bedroom as spending money. This morning he gave me a big cuddle, told me to have a good time and not to get drunk. I told him that I couldn't promise to do both of those.

I'm sure they will manage fine, they only have one Rugby tournament, 2 football matches and Tap Dancing lessons and have already been invited to a barbecue on Saturday afternoon.

I still feel a little guilty about leaving them so this is what I have left them to ease my guilt a little :

A Good Reason NOT to throw away your Daughter's Girls World

For those of you that saw my Silent Sunday post yesterday you will know that Jack is partial to wearing his 8 year old Sister's jewellery and hair accessories. I'm sure he doesn't have much choice really but all the same he does seem to enjoy it.

A few years ago my daughter had a Girls World which saw some action in it's short lifetime but very soon developed badly matted hair and permanent lipstick and eyeshadow, with the help of biros and felt tip pens. During one mass clearout of her bedroom it found its way into the bin.

In hindsight it was perhaps too soon to be getting rid of it as now she enjoys trying out different hairstyles on her dolls and ponies. Today though I think her and her friend were looking for a more life-like model for their make-up session :

Not quite mastered the 'pout' yet

Quick Sausage Paella........with Leftover BBQ Sausages

I'm not one to waste food & often find a use for leftovers. Luckily the family are used to my concoctions and seem to enjoy (most of) them.

My latest 'quick n easy use up the leftovers' meal is a Chicken & Sausage Paella, using the day befores (slightly charred) Pork & Herb sausages and  2 packs of Asda Quick Cook Paella Savoury Rice, priced at 54p each.

1 medium onion, chopped
1 medium courgette, chopped
1 medium green pepper, chopped
4 large mushrooms, sliced
chopped Garlic
650ml cold water (if using 2 packs)
A few (slightly charred) Sausages
Few strips of Asda frozen cooked chicken strips (I added this as there wasn't a lot of sausage to go around 5)

  • Fry off the onion, pepper, courgette, mushrooms & garlic for a minute or so.
  • Add the Savoury Rice Mix
  • Add around 100ml of water at a time & stir, when it has all been absorbed keep adding around 100ml at a time until it has all been absorbed.
  • Stir in the chicken strips (if using) & chopped sausage.
  • Put a lid on & leave on a low heat until the chicken & sausage has been warmed through.

Enjoy with a side salad or vegetables, or if you're like my kids they love to have Cauliflower Cheese with it.

It's also really nice (apparently) if you add cooked prawns instead of the sausages, but I'm not much of a seafood fan so you'll have to take my husband and daughters word for that.
