Enhancing Your Kitchen Space
Guest Post
Often, once you have lived in your home for a long time, some of the fun aspects of home ownership start to take a back seat to the obligations. Instead of deciding on wallpaper for a room, or choosing new furniture, all you seem to be doing to keep up with your home is updating your Aviva insurance policy and doing occasional costly repairs. Of course, maintaining your home is a necessary task, and by its nature it won't always be fun. But that doesn't mean that you should allow the creative side of home ownership to disappear completely!
For example, one project that can be both fun and useful, and which can help to put you back in touch with your home from a design standpoint, is to redesign your kitchen! Whether it's an intense remodeling project or simply switching a few features, this can lead you to a wonderful new kitchen, and new sense of creativity. Here are some basic kitchen design tips and ideas.
Separation
These days, many homes are built with kitchens adjacent to dining rooms, and in these cases there is often no door between the two rooms. This can be convenient, and depending on the design of your home it may be preferable. However, one fun tip - particularly if you are often hosting family and friends for large meals - may be to install a door of some kind between the kitchen and dining room. This will separate the work from the pleasure when you cook big meals, and can also lead to the dining room being set up as something to "reveal" when dinner is ready.
Entertainment
Even simpler is the idea of putting a bit of entertainment into your kitchen area. If you love to cook, chances are you have some manner of ritual for when you're busy in the kitchen. Some people like complete focus and concentration, some like to sing, and others like to listen to music. If you prefer a bit of entertainment while you're busy in the kitchen, consider installing a small flat screen television, or a set of speakers in your kitchen. Small electronic equipment can come fairly cheap and still be of very high quality, and might greatly improve your time in the kitchen.
Accommodation
Many homes are built with somewhat minimalist kitchens. The dining room is meant for meals, and the kitchen more for preparation. You may have a small kitchen table for occasions or simpler meals that are eaten in the kitchen - but in addition to this, consider having a small bar built in. A countertop or bar with a couple of barstools can be a great addition to any kitchen for the occasional drink, a break from cooking, breakfast on the go, etc. This will make your kitchen a more versatile environment.
